In Royall Tyler's The Contrast, there are numerous differing, or even contradicting, thoughts and ideas that are presented through the characters. The wide variety of contrasts shown in his work have their origin in where the characters are from. Fundamentally the main contrast is the difference between the city and the country life. This dissimilarity allows for the revelation of other contrasts. Tyler tends to have two types of characters, the more honorable and the more vain or frivolous one. He ingeniously expresses the different contrasts by the way the characters speak, think, and interact with one another. One major contrast is the different views on marriage.
