Literary Analysis on Sweat by Zora Neale Hurston
Sweat was written by Zora Neale Hurston as part of the massive creativity that occurred in New York during the 1920’s on, including a number of famous novels and short stories. Hurston, among with several other African-American writers, felt that their creativity was in fact being stifled by the political agenda that appeared to be required of them when working within what was termed as the “New Negro” Movement (Watson, 1996). Along with Langston Hughes, Hurston decided to start publishing a new journal that would allow their writing to be free of political influence. The resulting journal was called Fire, and was only published once because of financial concerns, but within it is found Sweat, the subject of this essay. The story is a realistic story...
