A stories setting and point of view contribute widely to the topic being conveyed by the author. The setting is very important and gives the reader more insight to the main idea and to the characters involved in the story. Point of view can either let the reader see things through the eyes of one character or through the eyes of many. James Baldwin did an excellent job in conveying both in “Sonny’s Blues” the setting of streets of black Harlem lets the reader understand the root of the conflict with drugs and self denial. The story being told by Sonny’s brother gives us insights as to how and why he thinks his brother choose the path he did.
